The federal government is in the process of updating a number of applicable rules and regulations as the result of the Supreme Court ruling in United States v. Windsor, in which the Court struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) as unconstitutional, clearing the way for same sex partners who marry in states that recognize gay marriage to receive federal benefits.
